IPsec Deployment Strategies for Securing LTE Networks
With the rapid growth of mobile broadband, Internet attackers are moving their focus to the mobile network as well. While mobile operators are migrating their networks to Long Term Evolution (LTE), mobile network planners must contend with new exposures that arise in this architecture. The backhaul network is one of the most significant exposures in LTE and it no longer has the mandatory encryption of traffic that it has in 3G.
This white paper demonstrates that there is a path to deploying IPsec that provides additional security to the LTE network while taking into consideration the growth of the operator’s LTE traffic and its ability to support those new requirements. Operators preparing for large-scale deployments of IPsec for LTE will ultimately need highly scalable platforms that are architected specifically for 3GPP Evolution and high availability. Because of expected growth of LTE and its need for higher bandwidth, Security Gateways will need to meet or exceed high-capacity throughput performance, carrier-grade availability, and full compliance to the latest 3GPP security standards.
